Director, Campaign for Parks

Parks & Trails New York is the statewide leader in efforts to increase funding and improve stewardship of New York’s state and local parks. Our Campaign for Parks has had several victories, including successfully advocating for the largest infusion of capital funding in the history of state parks.  Our efforts this year to Save our State Parks from closing has brought a new level of visibility to parks and inspired unprecedented grassroots activity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organize, activate, and provide leadership to create a vocal and effective parks coalition, including parks and environmental leaders, parks “friends” groups, other environmental organizations, and tourism and business stakeholders
  • Promote an aggressive agenda on parks issues
  • Advocate among opinion leaders and decision makers for improved stewardship and increased and new sources of government and private funding for parks
  • Educate and mobilize the public about issues involving parks and their contribution to our environment, health, economy, and quality of life

Qualifications

  • At least three years of proven, successful experience in organizing and mobilizing a diverse constituency and developing outreach and public education strategies and materials, including working with the media
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build consensus and public-private partnerships
  • Significant experience in government relations involving New York State’s legislative and budget processes
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public presentations and e-communications.
  • A self-starter able to work with minimum supervision and thrive in a collaborative and fast-paced office environment
  • Ability to undertake some degree of in-state travel with overnight and evening commitments
  • A passion for New York’s environment and for parks

Communications Assistant Internship

Are you looking for communications experience? Do you love to write? Are you interested in the environment?  Parks & Trails New York can provide you with hands-on experience, while you work to protect and expand  parks and trails in New York State. 

Skills:  Strong writer, good oral communicator, well-organized, multi-tasker

Description: Parks & Trails New York is looking for a part-time intern to assist with communications and outreach.

Hours:  Requires 12-15 week commitment of 10-20 hours/week.  Hours are flexible in terms of days and times. 

Projects

  • On-line communications – assist with e-newsletter content and production, support website development, monitor and maintain social/other networking sites such as Facebook and Flickr 
  • Events: assist in planning and promoting bike tours and trail celebration and clean-up events
  • Public Relations: Research media outlets, write press releases, feature articles
  • Website photo gallery – organize digital photos, develop as series of photo galleries for the Parks & Trails New York website

Work Environment: Friendly and hard-working staff.  Casual atmosphere.

School Correlation:  May be used for internship requirements.
